Mechanical Design of Heat Exchangers

Mechanical Design of Heat Exchangers

Author: Krishna P. Singh , Alan I. Soler

Number of pages: 1047

A tubular heat exchanger exemplifies many aspects of the challenge in designing a pressure vessel. High or very low operating pressures and temperatures, combined with sharp temperature gradients, and large differences in the stiffnesses of adjoining parts, are amongst the legion of conditions that behoove the attention of the heat exchanger designer. Pitfalls in mechanical design may lead to a variety of operational problems, such as tube-to-tubesheet joint failure, flanged joint leakage, weld cracks, tube buckling, and flow induced vibration. Internal failures, such as pass partition bowing or weld rip-out, pass partition gasket rib blow-out, and impingement actuated tube end erosion are no less menacing. Designing to avoid such operational perils requires a thorough grounding in several disciplines of mechanics, and a broad understanding of the inter relationship between the thermal and mechanical performance of heat exchangers. Yet, while there are a number of excellent books on heat ex changer thermal design, comparable effort in mechanical design has been non-existent. This apparent void has been filled by an assortment of national codes and industry standards, notably the...

First U.K. National Conference on Heat Transfer

First U.K. National Conference on Heat Transfer

Author: Yong Zhou

Number of pages: 637

First U.K. National Conference on Heat Transfer, Volume 2, documents the proceedings of the conference organized by the U.K. National Committee for Heat Transfer—a joint committee of the Institutions of Chemical and Mechanical Engineers and includes a member nominated by the Heat Transfer Society—held at the University of Leeds, on 3-5 July 1984. It is intended that the Leeds conference will be the first of a series of UK National Conferences which will be held at four-yearly intervals (1984, 1988, 1992 etc). Thus, for people working in the heat transfer field there will be an opportunity to present and discuss their work at a major conference every two years. This volume contains 52 papers that were presented during Sessions 11-20. The papers in Session 11 deal with enhanced heat transfer. Session 12 presents studies on two-phase flow and boiling. Session 13 contains papers on natural convection. Session 14 focuses measurement techniques in heat transfer while Session 15 deals with heat transfer in high temperature systems. The presentations in Session 16 cover heat transfer in combustion systems while those in Session 17 focus on convective heat transfer. Session 18 takes up ...

Closed Feedwater Heaters for Power Generation: A Working Guide

Closed Feedwater Heaters for Power Generation: A Working Guide

Author: Stanley Yokell , Michael Catapano , Eric Svensson

Number of pages: 432

Best practices for using closed feedwater heaters in power generation plants Based on the authors’ decades of industry experience, this book explains how to improve cycle efficiency and reduce the cost of fuel used to produce electricity using closed feedwater heaters. This practical guide describes the steam cycle and contains detailed information on how manufacturers build feedwater heaters. Closed Feedwater Heaters for Power Generation illustrates how to control the liquid level of the condensed extraction steam and offers recommendations for what to include in procurement specifications. Expert advice for evaluating manufacturers’ technical proposals for new and replacement feedwater heaters is provided. This comprehensive resource also discusses inspection, maintenance, and repair of closed feedwater heaters as well as failures and their causes. Complete coverage includes: The steam cycle Channel design and construction Tubing Tubesheets Tube-to-tubesheet joints Bundle construction Shell construction Assembly of bundles and shells Examining and testing feedwater heaters Quality assurance and quality control Level control Preparing procurement specifications Evaluating...
