little scratch

little scratch

Author: Rebecca Watson

Number of pages: 240

**Shortlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize 2021** **An Observer 10 Best Debut Novelists of 2021** 'An extremely perceptive depiction of power and agency.' Guardian 'Startlingly original.' VOGUE 'Extraordinary.' New Yorker little scratch tells the story of a day in the life of an unnamed woman, living in a lower-case world of demarcated fridge shelves and office politics; clock-watching and WhatsApp notifications. In a voice that is fiercely wry, touchingly delicate and increasingly neurotic, the protagonist relays what it takes to get through the quotidian detail of that single trajectory - from morning to night - while processing recent sexual violence. Featuring innovative use of typesetting, little scratch is about the coexistence of monotony with our waking, intelligent lives. It is a powerful evocation of how the external and internal aspects of our lives exist in a helix, and what it means to live out the course of a single day consumed by trauma. 'little scratch is a story that is urgent. It is a story that needs to be told.' Meena Kandasamy 'Reads like the cinders settling in the air after an explosion... daring and completely readable.' Colin Barrett 'little scratch is a ...

Alec Watson: Chucker?

Alec Watson: Chucker?

Author: Duncan McLeish

Number of pages: 99

There have been doubts raised about certain features of Alec Watson’s (1844-1920) life story. Firstly, about the date and place of his birth, investigation into the former confirmed the date generally accepted, but enquiries into the latter threw up a number of problems. The author’s enquiries suggest a place of birth not even mentioned before. Secondly, there were certainly doubts about the legality of Watson’s bowling action: was he a ‘chucker’? The author considers the arguments and sources about this and suggests what he hopes is a fair conclusion. There were no doubts about Watson’s success; the facts and figures contained herein speak for themselves. Nor is there any doubt about his successful career on the fringes of cricket: as groundsman at Old Trafford; as a cricket coach to clubs and schools; and as a progressive sports outfitter with three shops in central Manchester and a big house on its outskirts. Truly a Life in Cricket!

Was the war in Iraq, our first preemptive war, justified? Is it possible Iraq, while suffering through eleven years of economic sanctions, could have so thoroughly rebuilt its military after its disastrous defeat in 1991 to be a military threat to the United States? Is it possible rearmament on such a scale, had it occurred, could have been kept hidden? Despite the several Iraqi efforts, made months before the war started, to refute the Administration’s claims they had weapons to hide, despite the many indications they were right, we still went to war. Why? To free us of this imminent danger, to avenge 9/11, Why?

Trends in Parsing Technology

Trends in Parsing Technology

Author: Harry Bunt , Paola Merlo , Joakim Nivre

Number of pages: 298

Computer parsing technology, which breaks down complex linguistic structures into their constituent parts, is a key research area in the automatic processing of human language. The book presents an overview of the state of the art in current research into parsing technologies, focusing on three important themes: dependency parsing, domain adaptation, and deep parsing. The technology, which has a variety of practical uses, is especially concerned with the methods, tools and software that can be used to parse automatically. Applications include extracting information from free text or speech, question answering, speech recognition and comprehension, recommender systems, machine translation, and automatic summarization. New developments in the area of parsing technology are thus widely applicable, and researchers and professionals from a number of fields will find the material here required reading. Blue Planet, Blue God

Blue Planet, Blue God

Author: Meric Srokosz , Rebecca S. Watson

Number of pages: 255

The ocean dominates the surface of the earth and is in the pages of the Bible too. The Bible offers a view of the sea and the life it supports which affirms its intrinsic value to God as a good, and indeed essential, part of creation. At the same time, it also speaks perceptively of the sea’s vulnerability to damage and change. The Bible’s focus on the sea raises questions about economics and the interconnectedness of communities, whilst further references to the sea raise questions about our human-centredness and spirituality, and about our fear of chaos and disaster. In a unique collaborative project, the oceanographer Meric Srokosz and the biblical scholar Rebecca Watson not only offer environmental insights on the sea, but also connect the ocean with other key issues of broader concern—spirituality, economics, chaos, and our place in the world. Each chapter concludes with ideas for discussion and reflection, and for suggested actions in the light of the issues raised. The book will present a fresh new lens through which to view the Bible and as such inform biblical scholars, students, and preachers alike.

Diversity, equity and inclusion in sport and leisure

Diversity, equity and inclusion in sport and leisure

Author: Katherine Dashper , Thomas Fletcher

Number of pages: 209

Despite the mythology of sport bringing people together and encouraging everyone to work collectively to success, modern sport remains a site of exclusionary practices that operate on a number of levels. Although sports participation is, in some cases at least, becoming more open and meritocratic, at the management level it remains very homogenous; dominated by western, white, middle-aged, able-bodied men. This has implications both for how sport develops and how it is experienced by different participant groups, across all levels. Critical studies of sport have revealed that, rather than being a passive mechanism and merely reflecting inequality, sport, via social agents’ interactions with sporting spaces, is actively involved in producing, reproducing, sustaining and indeed, resisting, various manifestations of inequality. The experiences of marginalised groups can act as a resource for explaining contemporary political struggles over what sport means, how it should be played (and by whom), and its place within wider society. Central to this collection is the argument that the dynamics of cultural identities are contextually contingent; influenced heavily by time and place and ...

The Heretics

The Heretics

Author: Will Storr

Number of pages: 304

Why do obviously intelligent people believe things in spite of the evidence against them? Will Storr has travelled across the world to meet an extraordinary cast of modern heretics in order to answer this question. He goes on a tour of Holocaust sites with David Irving and a band of neo-Nazis, experiences his own murder during 'past-life regression' hypnosis, takes part in a mass homeopathic overdose, and investigates a new disease affecting tens of thousands of people - a disease that doesn't actually exist. Using a unique mix of personal memoir, investigative journalism and the latest research from neuroscience and experimental psychology, Storr reveals why the facts just won't convince some people, and how the neurological 'hero-maker' inside all of us can so easily lead to self-deception and science-denial. The Heretics will change the way you think about thinking.

Practicing Atheism

Practicing Atheism

Author: Hannah K. Scheidt

Number of pages: 228

"Practicing Atheism is a cultural study of contemporary atheism, focusing on how atheists negotiate meanings and values through media. This book examines a variety of cultural products, both corporate-driven and grassroots, that circulate messages about what atheism means - what ideas, values, affinities, and attitudes the term denotes. Through the creation, consumption, and exchange of this media, atheism gains positive content, the term signaling much more than lack of belief in god(s) for those who identify with the emergent culture. Primary source materials for this book include grassroots Internet communities, popular television programming, organized atheist events, and material culture representations of the movement, such as those found in atheist fan art. Practicing Atheism argues that atheist culture emerges from a unique tension with religion - a category atheists critique and resist but also, at times, imitate and approximate. Using a framework based on ritual studies, this book theorizes ambivalence, ambiguity, and "in-betweenness" as the essential condition of contemporary atheist culture"--
