Topics in the Theory of Lifting

Topics in the Theory of Lifting

Author: Alexandra Ionescu Tulcea , C. Ionescu Tulcea

Number of pages: 192

The problem as to whether or not there exists a lifting of the M't/. 1 space ) corresponding to the real line and Lebesgue measure on it was first raised by A. Haar. It was solved in a paper published in 1931 [102] by 1. von Neumann, who established the existence of a lifting in this case. In subsequent papers J. von Neumann and M. H. Stone [105], and later on 1. Dieudonne [22], discussed various algebraic aspects and generalizations of the problem. Attemps to solve the problem as to whether or not there exists a lifting for an arbitrary M't/. space were unsuccessful for a long time, although the problem had significant connections with other branches of mathematics. Finally, in a paper published in 1958 [88], D. Maharam established, by a delicate argument, that a lifting of M't/. always exists (for an arbi trary space of a-finite mass). D. Maharam proved first the existence of a lifting of the M't/. space corresponding to a product X = TI {ai,b,} ieI and a product measure J.1= Q9 J.1i' with J.1i{a;}=J.1i{b,}=! for all iE/. ,eI Then, she reduced the general case to this one, via an isomorphism theorem concerning homogeneous measure algebras [87], [88]. A different and more direct...

Bellow's People: How Saul Bellow Made Life Into Art

Bellow's People: How Saul Bellow Made Life Into Art

Author: David Mikics

Number of pages: 240

A leading literary critic’s innovative study of how the Nobel Prize–winning author turned life into art. Saul Bellow was the most lauded American writer of the twentieth century—the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, and the only novelist to be awarded the National Book Award in Fiction three times. Preeminently a novelist of personality in all its wrinkles, its glories and shortcomings, Bellow filled his work with vibrant, garrulous, particular people—people who are somehow exceptionally alive on the page. In Bellow’s People, literary historian and critic David Mikics explores Bellow’s life and work through the real-life relationships and friendships that Bellow transmuted into the genius of his art. Mikics covers ten of the extraordinary people who mattered most to Bellow, such as his irascible older brother, Morrie, a key inspiration for The Adventures of Augie March; the writer Delmore Schwartz and the philosopher Allan Bloom, who were the originals for the protagonists of Humboldt’s Gift and Ravelstein; the novelist Ralph Ellison, with whom he shared a house every summer in the late 1950s, when Ellison was coming off the...

Conference in Modern Analysis and Probability

Conference in Modern Analysis and Probability

Author: Richard Beals

Number of pages: 432

An NSF-supported conference in honor of Professor Shizuo Kakutani was held on June 8-11, 1982, at Yale University, on the occasion of Kakutani's retirement. The three major areas of mathematics on which the conference focused were functional analysis, probability theory, and ergodic theory. Most of the articles presented were works by the respective authors on problems that were pioneered by Professor Kakutani in the past. Questions in Brownian motion, induced transformations, representation of $M$-spaces, and fixed point theorems were discussed.

Notable Mathematicians

Notable Mathematicians

Author: Robyn V. Young , Zoran Minderović

Number of pages: 612

"Time to meet an increase in the lives of mathematicians, this volume covers over 300 of them, from antiquity to the present. Many contemporary African-American, Asian-American, and Hispanic-American women are included. The alphabetically arranged entries contain a heading with name, birth and death dates, field of specialization, nationality, and ethnicity when applicable, as well as a picture when possible. An accompanying essay describes the life and significant contribution of the person to the field of mathematics with suggestions for further information, which include books, periodicals, documentaries, and Web sites. The list of milestones in mathematics begins at 50,000 BC with evidence of primitve counting and continues until the present."--"Outstanding Reference Sources : the 1999 Selection of New Titles", American Libraries, May 1999.
